New data obtained by Judicial Watch has revealed that San Francisco’s rape and murder rates have skyrocketed as a result of the city’s sanctuary policies toward illegal immigrants. Even though San Francisco has been an official sanctuary region since 1989, politicians and local law enforcement administrators have repeatedly amended the policy to the point where almost no one can be detained or deported from the city for any reason whatsoever.

Rape was up 370 percent and murder was up 55 percent in San Francisco during the period from 2011 to 2015. The dry statistics are no match for a recent example: On July 1 of this year Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, an illegal immigrant and convicted felon who had already been deported five times, murdered a woman, Kate Steinle, on Pier 14 in a crime that brought attention to the issue of sanctuary policies.

At the time of her brutal murder, Steinle was enjoying a stroll along the waterfront with her father and a friend. Lopez-Sanchez gunned her down in cold blood for no apparent reason.

What began as a way to shield poor, struggling families in 1989, San Francisco’s current policy has morphed into a legislative nightmare. Local law enforcement personnel refuse to turn illegal immigrants over to federal authorities, even when the illegal immigrants are convicted felons or rapists. Instead of alerting Immigration and Customs Enforcement, San Francisco officials look the other way and allow the criminals to roam the city freely.

From 1989 until 2013 the city’s sanctuary policy was similar to the ones in many places across the U.S., but in 2013 everything changed, for the worse. San Francisco updated its policy to require that local law enforcement personnel ignore federal law. That move opened the door not just to illegal immigrants, but to violent immigrants as well.

The newly released statistics offer a key insight into the effect of that “upgraded” policy, and made it obvious that the massive surge in rapes and murders in San Francisco is almost certainly a result of the nation’s most liberal immigration policy.

Just this week, Jeh Johnson, Secretary of Homeland Security, pointed out that the federal government had notified the city of San Francisco about Lopez-Sanchez and his various felony convictions. At that point, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency asked the local sheriff in San Francisco to detain Lopez-Sanchez.

But the local officials ignored that request and sent Mr. Lopez-Sanchez out onto the streets of San Francisco, free to roam, free to rape, free to murder. Homeland Security’s Johnson said sanctuary policies are, for the most part, “counterproductive and unacceptable.”

There are people around the world patiently waiting to become US citizens. There is no reason to reward law breakers with citizenship while other law abiding people follow our laws and go through the legal process to become citizens. Rewarding law breakers simply encourages people to break laws and it punishes people that choose to follow the rules.
