[VIDEO] Enemies Beware: Navy Tests Electromagnetic Railgun With 125 Mile Range

The United States Military may have a new weapon at its disposal as the Navy has successfully tested its new hyper-sonic electromagnetic rail gun.

According to Newsweek, the gun will have the capability of firing a projectile at 4,500 mph, and destroying heavily armored targets from as far as 125 miles away.

Unlike conventional weapons, that rely on chemical reactions to pressure a projectile forward, the rail gun uses magnetic propulsion.

This technology, when mounted on a ship, will limit the risks associated with stockpiling ammunition.


The actual internal workings of a rail-gun are either simple or complex, depending on how much you paid attention in Physics class.

Essentially, there are two parallel, metal rails within the weapon, hence the name. These two rails are electrified with an immense electric current, creating two electromagnetic fields.

The metal projectile is placed between the two rails, and the magnetic field emitted by electrons travelling along the rails propels the projectile forward.

While this technology has numerous benefits, there are also disadvantages as well.

Because of the immense amount of electricity needed to power such a weapon, few ships in the US Navy would actually, as things stand, be able to sustain a mounted rail gun on their decks.

Secondly, rail gun tests in the past have found that the heat generated from the gun may quickly deteriorate the weapon itself if projectiles are fired in quick succession.

Multiple reports on this test did not indicate whether or not the Navy has solved these potential problems, or how they are being worked around them if they have not.


In any event, the rail gun is still a remarkable military technological breakthrough that may some day provide an efficient missile defense or anti-aircraft system for the naval fleet.
